A: I am just a normal guy that has a passion for fitness. I was born and raised in an 8,000 person town in the state of Rhode Island. Over the past few years, I've been pursuing my dream of creating a sustainable online business that helps people build lean muscle from the comfort of their own home. I also train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu on my spare time and currently hold the rank of purple belt.
Q. What got you started in fitness?
A: I have been active in sports my entire life and played basketball in college. After graduation, I accepted an accounting job that offered me a decent salary and health benefits. Within a few months, the 80-90 hours of tax season started to take it's toll on my body. I had no time to join a gym and started resorting to junk food as a remedy for my depression. One day I came home and found my girlfriend (who I lived with at the time) cheating on me. That was the day when I stopped living my life based on other people's standards and started focusing intensely on my training. Shortly after, I decided to build a business around my passion of fitness.
Q. What is it about fitness that you love so much?
A. I love the transparency of fitness. You can't purchase a strong body or inherit one from your rich uncle. Fitness weeds out the "talkers" of life because you have to put in the work to get the results. Your body is a visual representation of your work ethic in the gym. I love the challenge of fitness and both the physical and mental benefits that it provides.
Q. What adversities have you had to overcome?
A: Nutrition was the biggest adversity I faced when pursuing my fitness goals. I never understood how the foods you ate mattered more than the labor you put into your workouts. As a result, I struggled to build lean muscle because my body fat percentage wasn't low enough. When I started to align my nutrition with my activity levels, everything started to change in my favor.
Q. What are your favorite and least favorite exercises?
A. My favorite exercise is suitcase curls for the biceps. You can do them at home or on the road when you're traveling. My least favorite exercise is pullups because I can't do as many as I'd like.
Q. What are your tips for the beginner, intermediate and advanced?
A: I would tell beginners to focus on the consistency of their workout and nutrition. Virtually everyone starts a training regimen at some point in their life, but very few people are able to stick with it over the long-term. Instead of searching for a quick fix to get in shape, embrace the challenges that come with transforming your body. Making this small mental shift will help you stick to your program on the days that you don't feel like training.
I think the main focus for intermediate levels should be switching up their workouts. One of the toughest things to deal with in bodybuilding is the plateau phase. If you continue to do the same routine over and over again, your body will eventually adapt to the movements. This can stagnate your growth which can be extremely frustrating. Fortunately, it doesn't take much effort to modify your routine. You can change your rep counts, sets, or even rotate free weights, Nautilis machines, and bodyweight workouts.
For advanced levels, I think the most important aspect of training is to push past your current limitations. By now you've realized that muscle growth occurs in those last 2-3 reps. This is where you need to develop the mental strength to strive towards the pain at the end of each set. Far too often, I see people just going through the motions of their workout. If you want to take your body to the next level, then you need to be completely present during your training sessions.
Q. Where do you stand on the use of steroids and supplements?
A. I have never used steroids and honestly don't know much about them. Going through the rigors of getting in shape has given me a lot of confidence in my life. I've always felt that using steroids would cheapen the accomplishment of being in shape. I am however a fan of supplements such as whey protein, multivitamins, BCAA's, and pre-workouts such as NO Explode.
Q. What are your future goals?
A: My future goal is to help 1 million people world wide transform their bodies through my online business. I have used fitness as a vehicle to transform my own life. During this process, I have developed a passion to help others do the same. I also want to earn my black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Q. What is the toughest part about fitness for you?
A: The toughest part about fitness is that your results are perishable. You can lose months of hard work by slacking off for just a few weeks. On the other hand, this forces you to stay consistent with your routine because you don't want your efforts to go to waste.
Q. Tell us about your Extreme Home Workouts program.
A: I created my Extreme Home Workouts course when I was an overweight accountant working 90 hour weeks. I had no time to join a gym and wasn't getting the results I wanted by doing bodyweight workouts. Instead of buying an expensive set of weights, I started using everyday home equipment to simulate the exercises I performed in a gym.
During the process I realized that weight is weight. It doesn't matter if it comes in the form of a barbell, dumbbell, suitcase, water jug, or chair. In the Extreme Home Workouts course, you'll use equipment that you have stored in your refrigerator, closet, office, and bedroom. You'll have beginner and advanced workouts for each major muscle group - the chest, shoulders, biceps, triceps, back, legs, and abdominals. This program is for people that want to build lean muscle and burn fat without joining a 12 month gym membership or purchasing an expensive set of weights.
